SXSW 2017: R.LUM.R
gig poster

BRIEF
This poster was made as a class project in my Fundamentals of
Digital Media at Stevenson University in April 2017. My challenge was to create a gig poster for an existing music festival. I chose the 2017 South by Southwest (SXSW) music festival and the R&B artist, R.LUM.R, who was performing in the festival that year.
Digital Media at Stevenson University in April 2017. My challenge was to create a gig poster for an existing music festival. I chose the 2017 South by Southwest (SXSW) music festival and the R&B artist, R.LUM.R, who was performing in the festival that year.
PROCESS
The first step of the process was to do visual research. I made a Pinterest board and looked for examples of real gig posters. I also research photography and music art related to R.LUM.R and alternative R&B. I listened to R.LUM.R's music to get a sense of themes, imagery, and emotions used in his music.
Then, I began designing. I played with making textures. I aimed to make something scratchy, but calm. To achieve the texture in the final version of the poster, I used sandpaper to scratch black-printed toner paper with scraps of cardstock paper underneath to create the blurry shapes seen in the background of the poster.
R.LUM.R's face was made by tracing a photograph of him in Illustrator using the pen tool. The city in the background is New Orleans, and I made it by manipulating an image in Photoshop before doing an Image Trace in Illustrator. The poster was assembled in Illustrator too.
